Frozen sea wind farm to be extended by 40 turbines

Finnish offshore win operator Suomen Hyötytuuli is planning to expand its current Tahkoluoto site by 40 turbines, it says.

Believed to be the first offshore wind farm in frozen sea conditions, Tahkoluoto consists of 11 turbines, 80-90 metres high, with a blade diameter of 101-103 metres. Each generates between 2.3MW and 4.2MW.

Kicking off with a demonstration project that will see two turbines installed to pilot larger scale turbines, the ultimate aim is to install 40 of them, each with a generation capacity of more than 15MW – much bigger than the existing 11.

Water and building permits have already been granted for the demonstration project, which is 4-22 kilometres off the coast of Pori in western Finland. They will be installed with a foundation concept specifically for deep waters – 15-45 metres – in the frozen water conditions.

The demonstration project has received a grant of €30 million from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment in Finland, and will use comprehensive environmental analyses, Suomen Hyötytuuli says. 

The demonstration project will be built by 2026, with the 40 turbines due to be installed from 2027 to 2029.
