Getares Uno in service at Port of Algeciras
Ireland’s Safehaven Marine has just launched Gatares Uno, a new Interceptor 48 pilot vessel for the Port of Algeciras in Spain.
Getares Uno is powered by twin Volvo D13 500 hp engines through Twin Disc 5114 gearboxes turning 27″ diameter propellers on conventional sterngear, providing the vessel with a fully loaded operational speed of 24 knots. On sea trials the craft proved exceptionally quiet, with only 74dB being recorded at maximum speed.
The vessel has seating for four to five pilots and two crew on CAB 500 series suspension seats in the main cabin. One pilot seat features a table in front with a repeater display for navigation and AIS data and communication.
The Interceptor’s design also features and additional seating area for up to six passengers in the spacious forward cabin. This forward accommodation area and facilities provides the crew with extended operations capability. The cabin is fitted out to a high standard, featuring a teak and holy cabin sole, warm wood laminates and dark grey sidelining throughout. These refinements coupled with the Interceptor’s deep V twin chine, semi-displacement hull provides a soft ride for the crew and pilots, allowing comfortable and relaxed transits.
The vessel incorporates the latest refinements Safehaven has developed for its pilot boats over the years, including the special sacrificial fender fitted at the vessel’s shoulders. This significantly softens boarding transfer impacts and protects the boat’s main fendering, which features a 150mm by 150mm main deck edge fender augmented by multiple diagonals along the side and a lower run above the waterline, fully protecting the hull from damage.
Pilot MOB recovery is via a Jason’s cradle which is stored in a locker on the vessel’s side for quick deployment in an emergency. The design features a central helm position which offers panoramic vision all round and above, and offers a helming position totally focused on providing the operator with the maximum comfort and control of the vessel, especially during the often challenging conditions a pilot vessel encounters. Twin Raymarine C120 displays for radar and plotter are integrated into the wrap around helm console, easily viewed and controlled by the helmsman.
Special consideration was given to efficient cooling of the engine room for hot climate operations and thus the vessel is fitted with large 500mm diameter engine room ventilation fans. Maximum ventilation is also provided for the accommodation area.
Designed for all weather operations, the Interceptor 48’s full keel provides excellent directional stability and, coupled to Safehaven’s specially designed rudders and powerful Hypro Marine supplied power steering system, makes the vessel exceptionally manoeuvrable, with quick, light steering of just four turns lock to lock.
Now in operation at Algeciras, the port’s pilots are happy with both performance and handling.
