Herbosch-Kiere to lay cables for Bahrain and archipelago
Work to lay three 66kV submarine cables between Bahrain mainland and its Hawar Islands will begin this month.
Flemish marine construction company Herbosch-Kiere has been selected to install the cables, using its multi-purpose, self-propelled vessel Atlantis.
The vessel is ideal for carrying out this type of shallow water work, says the company, because of its limited draught.
The project is due to be completed within three months.
Bahrain’s Electricity & Water Authority last year awarded the $125.6 million (€112 million) contract to the Saudi Arabian construction firm Al-Gihaz Contracting, which sub-contracted Herbosch-Kiere.
The cables are 66kV XPLE submarine cables with built-in fibre optic cables and will be installed between the landing stations on the mainland and the Hawar Islands archipelago, approximately 25 kilometres away. In total there are 36 islands, but many of the smaller ones are uninhabited.
Herbosch-Kiere, part of the Eiffage Group, is headquartered in Antwerp with an office in London.
