Humberside, UK – March 2024 - Charity and Taylor, part of the Aage Hempel Group and a leader in maritime electronic solutions, has successfully completed the installation and now provides ongoing maintenance for a state-of-the-art radar early warning system supporting Centrica’s North Sea operations.
This project utilizes the Furuno FCARS (Furuno Coastal Avoidance Radar System), significantly strengthening safety and operational efficiency for Centrica’s offshore energy infrastructure.
The Furuno FCARS delivers high-resolution, real-time maritime traffic monitoring, enabling early detection of vessel movements. The system uses powerful Timezero coastal monitoring software alongside the latest solid state radar technology. By collecting radar and AIS data from multiple sources over the air, this advanced system supports proactive safety measures and helps mitigate risks to offshore assets by providing robust situational awareness as well as a record and replay facility for incident investigations.
Charity and Taylor, in partnership with Furuno UK, managed the entire project lifecycle, from initial planning and system integration through installation both on the offshore asset and ERRV (Emergency response and rescue vessel) to commissioning and ongoing maintenance. The expertise of the joint team ensured the system meets rigorous industry safety standards and delivers optimal performance.
“Supporting Centrica with this REWS upgrade reinforces our commitment to delivering advanced maritime solutions,” said Dave Pressley, UK Sales Manager at Charity and Taylor. “The Furuno FCARS offers unmatched situational awareness, giving Centrica greater visibility and control over their offshore perimeter.”
Centrica Energy Storage’s project engineer, Thomas, shared his appreciation for the collaboration:
“I would like to express Centrica Energy Storage’s appreciation to the C&T and Furuno UK team during our Radar replacement project. The team demonstrated agility by meeting stringent cybersecurity requirements, delivered the project on a tight schedule, and collaborated efficiently with all stakeholders. I recommend C&T and Furuno UK for their support, expertise, and performance. It has been a positive experience working with them.”
This successful deployment further strengthens Charity and Taylor’s reputation for delivering mission-critical systems to the UK’s offshore energy sector. The Furuno FCARS installation ensures Centrica can maintain safe and efficient operations, backed by reliable radar surveillance.
