September 2017 Fareham UK – Mercator Media Ltd, the producer of the highly regarded GreenPort Congress and Cruise Conference, has announced the inaugural American edition is to be hosted by the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimoreand The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT). It will take place May 16-18, 2018 in the Baltimore Convention Center.

GreenPort Congress America provides Senior Executives with a meeting place to share and discuss the latest in sustainable development and environmental practice within sea ports, terminals and their associated logistics supply chains. The two-and-a-half-day conference will contain a range of themes from smarter ports, land redevelopment to the challenges of intermodal connections. Session formats will include interactive presentations, discussion panels, case studies, networking opportunities and will conclude with an exclusive tour of the Port of Baltimore on the final day.

Over the past decade, the Congress has been held in European locations including Hamburg, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Venice and Amsterdam and has become an increasingly international event with delegates from more than 30 countries in 2016. The launch of the America edition further expands this platform and presents a great opportunity for businesses wishing to connect with this influential audience.

Baltimore was chosen as the ideal partner for the first US edition as it has a multifaceted sea port with terminals dealing with automobiles, containers, farm and construction equipment, forest products, breakbulk cargo and cruise passengers. The Port was recently named one of the fastest-growing ports in North America by the Journal of Commerce following its recognition as the most efficient container port in the United States and is central to economic activity on the east coast. The Port of Baltimore combines its enviable growth with a strong commitment to meeting its obligations for improved air and water quality and ensuring protection for the environment whilst building international business.

Andrew Webster, CEO of Mercator Media Ltd, comments, “After working with the great port cities in Europe, the GreenPort Conference has evolved to make a central contribution to the debate about how to strike the right balance between environment considerations with the realities of economic demands. We are very much looking forward to the opportunity of producing our first GreenPort America in Maryland, working with the Port of Baltimore and the Maryland Department of Transportation.”

About Port of Baltimore USA

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA) oversees the Port of Baltimore’s six public marine terminals. The MDOT MPA has made significant environmental progress to reduce emissions at the Port’s public marine terminals in the last several years. Older dray trucks that move cargo through the Port have been replaced with newer and cleaner versions. Other pieces of cargo-handling equipment such as forklifts and yard tractors have had exhaust system upgrades or engine replacements. Locomotives have had automatic stop-start, anti-idling devices installed. New storm water management technologies have also been executed.

The MDOT MPA has a nationally recognized dredged material management program that focuses on innovative reuse of sediment dredged from channels leading to the Port of Baltimore. Long-eroded islands in Maryland have been rebuilt to full capacity. This program also resulted in one of the largest environmental restoration projects in Maryland. The MDOT MPA is the largest creator of wetlands in Maryland.

Combining both the public and private marine terminals, the Port of Baltimore saw 31 million tons of international cargo cross its docks last year which was valued at approximately $49 billion. Baltimore is ranked as the top port among all U.S. ports for handling autos and light trucks, farm and construction machinery, and imported sugar. Overall Baltimore is ranked ninth for the total dollar value of cargo and 14th for cargo tonnage for all U.S. ports.

Business at the Port of Baltimore generates about 13,650 direct jobs, while more than 127,000 jobs in Maryland are linked to port activities. The Port is responsible for nearly $3 billion in personal wages and salary and $310 million in state and local tax revenues.
