New Mustang at Seawork
UK boatbuilder Mustang Marine will have its new first in class Supacat SMV24 offshore windfarm aluminium catamaran on display at Seawork 2013.
The vessel is a first for Mustang and a first for operator, Supacat, in the offshore wind sector. A scale model of the SMV24 will be on the pontoon at Seawork.
It’s being built by Mustang at its Pembroke Dock facility under a contract announced by Supacat in March this year. It should be completed by September.
The vessel has been designed as ‘one boat to replace many’ to offer a flexible, cost effective solution to conducting multiple support tasks for offshore wind farms and other offshore facilities. It features a revolutionary deck system – key to its multi-role performance.
Supacat commissioned naval architect, Incat Crowther, to translate its SMV 24 concept into a detailed design. DNV advised on classification. The SMV24 will meet DNV 1A1 HSLC R1 Windfarm Service Vessel Class 1 and be UK MCA SCV Code (MGN280) Category 1.
Ian Strugnell, commercial director, Mustang Marine (Wales) Ltd, told Maritime Journal that Supacat approached Mustang Marine about the SMV 24 and was eventually selected for the build project.
The SMV24 represents a move into the renewable energy market for Supacat. The company is located in the South West Marine Energy Park, the first of its kind in the UK, which means it’s ideally placed to collaborate on renewable energy projects.
Meanwhile, Mustang Marine is creating 100 jobs as part of a £1.5m expansion following strong global orders – a move that will double its workforce.
Mr Strugnell said to MJ: “The new facilities will provide the space to increase the required capacity across the complete range of boats Mustang Marine build and engineer.”
