Advance fire risk detection improves safety

A new technology that monitors electrical installations and equipment can alerting those onboard a vessel to the risk of an electrical fire long before it starts.

WES Hotspot

WES Hotspot activates as soon as abnormal heat (80ºC ± 5°C) is detected with instant power disconnection when abnormal heat is detected where supply is via an RCD. Once activated, the single and multi-point sensors send a signal to an alarm system, which immediately alerts key personnel via text to a smartphone, a building alarm system or app.

“The technology has the ability to turn what could potentially escalate to an emergency, life threatening situation into a simple maintenance task, and can be easily retrofitted to an existing vessel,” said John Newbury, product manager for WES Hotspot manufacturer Ramtech Electronics.

Robust safeguarding

The system consists of a multipoint heat sensor to monitors temperatures at connection points within consumer units and distribution boards. This is suitable for both early warning and isolation purposes.

There is also a single point sensor which is designed to detect excessive heat within consumer units and distribution boards. It is suitable for higher temperature monitoring from 80ºC to 240ºC

WES Hotspot’s enhanced twin socket is supplied with inbuilt thermal protection and power isolation capability and is suitable for installation on RCD or RCBO circuits.

Miniaturisation of the technology means WES Hotspot can be fitted in a wide range of consumer units, distribution boards, sockets and electrical equipment.
