GB£1m funding drive for survival garment

The man behind a self-heating survival garment design aims to raise GB£1m to start manufacturing the prototype.

Iron Ocean

Simon Lamont, founder & CEO of Iron Ocean is in the process of fundraising GB£500,000 for the company’s Centurion 3 offshore survival garment, with the understanding that Scottish Enterprise will match this amount.

GB£295,000 has been raised in private equity investment over the last three years and once Iron Ocean reaches its goal, it hopes to promote Centurion 3 as a unique survival aid in the event of an incident or accident at sea.

Centurion 3 is made up of CARFIBEX, the most advanced base layer fabric in the world, according to Iron Ocean. It uses REACTA Gel Aqua, which provides immediate heat on contact with cold water; REACTA Gel Air, which generates essential heat in extreme cold conditions; and REACTA Gel Core, which acts as an advance barrier to shield against the cold.

CARFIBEX features cashmere for comfort and softness, carbon fibre for advance moisture management and lycra for garment strength and fit.

Iron Ocean worked with the Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC) to design and develop the garment, which Maritime Journal reported on in February 2019.
