Marine market access made easier

Intertek has gained accreditation to test fire detection and alarm products to the requirements of IEC 60092-504:2016 and IEC 60533:2015, the testing standards that must be met to comply with the Marine Equipment Directive 2014/90/EU (MED).

Bruce McGill, vice president of global certification for electrical at Intertek, said: “We are delighted to add this new accreditation to our scope of Total Quality Assurance (TQA) testing services and enhance our life safety and security offering to the marine industry.”

First accreditation

Intertek is the first and currently the only UK testing laboratory to be accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to perform the required EMC and environmental testing to IEC 60092-504 and IEC 60533 standards for fire products. This allows Intertek to issue accredited test reports.

Manufacturers of life safety products are increasingly diversifying and selling their products into the marine industry.

To access this market, manufacturers must ensure their products comply with the testing requirements of IEC 60092-504 for automation, control and instrumentation, and IEC 60533 for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

Both these standards are required as part of the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/1397. Compliance to IEC 60092-504 IEC 60533 is typically required by International Marine Accreditation Approval Bodies in order to issue their own Type Approval.
