Shallow water navigation simulator

The new shallow water navigation simulator, which is in the process of being set up, has been funded by the German Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure. The Duisburg Development Centre for Ship Technology and Transport Systems (DST) is looking after it technically and continuing to develop it. Trainers and those participating in courses at the HGK Shipping Training Centre will gain regular access to the simulator as part of a cooperation agreement with DST and they can train how to steer various types of inland waterway vessels in different navigation situations in a safe environment.

Thanks to having the latest technology, “SANDRA II” (Simulator for Advanced Navigation Duisburg – Research and Application) can simulate the motion behaviour of inland waterway vessels very realistically. All the relevant environmental influences such as shallow water and wall effects, the interaction between vessels as well as the wind and current can be included in the modelling procedure. The specifications of different types of vessels and drive systems as well as load situations can also be included.

“SANDRA II“ will become part of the training courses at the HGK Shipping Training Centre in Duisburg as a regular feature this year. The range of courses is geared to both crew members on the fleet managed by HGK and outside participants. The lecturers at the Training Centre will attend a special further training course to qualify them as certified trainers, so-called instructors, for the navigation simulator. As a result, young inland waterways personnel can gain experience and more proficient persons can fine-tune their skills and learn how to respond properly in stress and danger situations. The training programme will also include how to navigate vessels in an energy-efficient manner.

The cooperation arrangement with DST will also make it possible to train the navigation personnel at HGK Shipping to operate innovative new vessels in the company’s fleet before they are put into service. This will particularly involve forward-looking ship designs and sustainable drive concepts.
