Schottel propels US Coast Guard’s waterways fleet forward

These components will equip 16 River Buoy Tenders (WLR) and 11 Inland Construction Tenders (WLIC) being built at Birdon America’s Bayou La Batre shipyard in Alabama.

Better performance

Schottel’s Steerable Rudder Propellers (SRP) will be key to the vessels’ performance, offering 597 kW (800 HP) of input power and enhanced manoeuvrability. 

Equipped with Schottel’s SDC40 nozzles and DuroVario-S clutches, the thrusters deliver high efficiency and precise control, helping ensure smooth operation and reduced environmental impact.

Additionally, the vessels will include Schottel’s LeaCon sealing system, which prevents water contamination and complies with VGP regulations, ensuring sustainable operation.

These upgrades are vital for the US Coast Guard’s mission to maintain over 630 million tonnes of annual cargo flow through inland waterways.

These new vessels, featuring mixed-gender accommodations and improved living space, will replace an aging fleet averaging 57 years.

The first WCC is expected to enter service by 2027, marking a significant leap in operational capacity and environmental stewardship for the organisation.
