ECDIS training
Ahead of next year’s introduction of mandatory ECDIS carriage requirements, Transas Marine has launched a new computer based training course (CBT) certified by Germanischer Lloyd.
Based on IMO’s Model Course 1.27, it comprises 17 chapters and tests under four central ECDIS themes: Theory, Basic Functions, Operational Use, and Errors & Malfunctions.
Successful trainees will receive a certificate of completion with respect to equipment specific familiarisation. This will entitle them to undergo a reduced two day course at a Transas approved training centre to gain full GL approved certification. The CBT course is available in English on DVD or online via Transas partners, ShipGaz Training in Sweden. It can be undertaken either ashore or onboard a vessel.
Meanwhile, training specialists ECDIS Ltd of Chelmsford have installed a new Navmaster system at their eNavigation centre in Southampton. Designed by Plymouth based PC Maritime, it will be used to deliver generic IMO course data as well as type specific ECDIS training. ECDIS say that installation of the equipment will not only serve to enhance basic ECDIS training by providing familiarisation with different systems currently in use, but will also allow PC Maritime to showcase its widely adopted expertise.
Separately, the International Hydrographic Organization in Monaco is convening a two day workshop on ECDIS Software Issues from 15 to 16 February. Among those expected to attend are technical bodies, equipment manufacturers and relevant world authorities.
