Irish underwater atlas launched
Atlas of the Deep Water Seabed, Ireland, a detailed compendium of stunning 3D imagery of submarine canyons, underwater mountains and abyssal plains that make up Ireland’s seabed territory, was launched at the Geoscience 2010 conference in Dublin at the beginning of November.
The ceremony was presided over by Conor Lenihan, Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources. Copies can be ordered direct from amazon.co.uk .
Compiled by University College, Cork, from data acquired as part of the Irish National Seabed Survey (INSS) and the INFOMAR inshore seabed survey projects undertaken by the Geological Survey of Ireland along with the national Marine Institute and others, the atlas is claimed to be the world’s first of its type. Its appearance follows publication earlier this year of The Real Map of Ireland featuring a complete 3D overview of Ireland’s seabed territory covering an area ten times the country’s land mass.
