Offshore wind powers record Crown Estate profit

This landmark result marks The Crown Estate’s highest ever return to the Treasury, contributing to a decade-long total of GB£5 billion. 

“Across our diverse portfolio, we are laying the foundations for dependable long-term growth. We are also strengthening the UK’s energy security by working closely with our customers and partners to bring stability to the offshore wind sector,” said Dan Labbad, chief executive officer at The Crown Estate.

”Thanks to new legislation, we now have greater flexibility to invest across our portfolio, increasing our resilience and potential and enabling us to create lasting benefits for the country and its finances.”

A good return

The surge underscores the growing value of the UK’s renewable energy sector, particularly offshore wind, which continues to stimulate economic and environmental returns.

Round 4 alone is expected to deliver up to 8GW of clean energy, enough to power eight million homes, while Round 5, which focuses on floating offshore wind, aims to add another 4.5GW.

A further 4.7GW could come through a dedicated Capacity Increase Programme.

In total, the UK’s offshore wind pipeline now stands at a potential 50GW, which The Crown Estate said is a vital step toward energy security and carbon reduction.

To support the growth of offshore wind, The Crown Estate said it has earmarked GB£400 million for marine construction, port infrastructure and the subsea supply chain – critical investments that also bolster the marine civils sector.

As demand increases for seabed space, not only for renewable energy, but also for subsea cables and interconnectors, The Crown Estate said its marine portfolio remains central to long-term growth with offshore wind as a cornerstone of the UK’s renewable energy strategy.

Back in June, The Crown Estate awarded two massive Celtic Sea offshore floating wind projects each with a 1.5GW generation target.
