Environmental monitoring for port of Dover

Two British companies are combining their expertise to develop a comprehensive environmental monitoring system to be installed at the Port of Dover writes Dag Pike.

Port of Dover is one of Britain's busiest harbours

Marico Marine and OceanWise will collaborate on this auspicious project, bringing together both companies’ unique expertise to create a state of the art system. OceanWise will be designing, integrating and installing the new system that will monitor, manage and publish environmental data in the Port of Dover.

Robert Proctor, an oceanographer at OceanWise commented: “We will install a new tide station and a range of sensors which will monitor the constantly changing environmental conditions at the Port. Historical and real-time data will be published via the OceanWise system ‘Port-Log’ which integrates the often-complex range of sensor data and displays it into an easy-to-use single output (web page) which can be shared, viewed and manipulated by multiple users”.

The OceanWise system makes up part of the new ‘state of the art’ system being installed at the port, which has been designed to improve operations, support decision making and enhance efficiencies. Marico Marine will bring their marine expertise to this project based on wide experience on marine risk assessment and port consultancy matters.

OceanWise Ltd is an independent company specialising in all aspects of marine environmental data acquisition, data and knowledge management and GIS providing customers with comprehensive and cost effective end-to-end marine and coastal data management and decision making support which includes intelligent marine mapping and marine data management policy and strategy advice and training. A speciality of the company is their environmental data sharing and publishing system known as Port-Log.

Marico Marine has offices in both the UK and in New Zealand and has carried out navigation risk assessments for a number of British ports. Their available software includes Hazman II that provides a complete guide to the reduction of risks in a wide variety of port operations. The system being developed for the Port of Dover will provide a complete record of all of the environmental aspects of the port including both current and historical data. This can be presented in both graphic and numerical form and can help as the basis for analysing incidents and potential risk factors.
