JV offers complete tidal package

A new European tidal energy joint venture (JV) aims to provide an end to end service for developers and customers.

Tocardo's T1 tidal turbine

The JV between QED Naval Ltd and Inyanga Marine Projects comes with the acquisition of Netherlands-based tidal turbines business Tocardo. The JV will offer a standardised, off-the-shelf catalogue of tidal turbines, platform foundation solutions, marine operations including installation, retrieval operations and cable laying as well as design, support and service expertise.

Richard Parkinson, CEO of Inyanga Tech, said: “This bigger, long term, end to end vision is quite unique in that it brings a pool of expertise and collaboration across European tidal energy that no other company has.”

Combined technologies

Through a fully integrated platform solution combining the benefits of QED Naval’s Subhub tidal platform and Inyanga’s HydroWing tidal device, improvements of over 25% site yield are achievable as well as cost savings of over 50% on operational deployment and ongoing maintenance, said the companies.

The JV will now aim to combine its technologies in new tidal projects for island communities and dedicated industrial applications, beginning this year. The companies intend to scale up production and capacity of their tidal turbines to make a real contribution to global net zero CO2 ambitions.

Tocardo will continue investing to develop more powerful and cost-effective tidal turbines. This will be done in partnership with QED Naval and Inyanga.
