Diesel-electric newbuilds for Poland
Two diesel-electric multipurpose vessels are being built to help improve operational capabilities in Poland’s maritime sector next year.
Remontowa Shipbuiding yard in Gdańsk is currently constructing the two 60 by 12.8m vessels, to be delivered to the maritime office in Szczecin in the second quarter of 2020 and the maritime office in Gdynia in the third quarter of 2020. The first hull, with a moulded 4.7m depth, was launched from the shipyard at Gdańsk in July with the second to follow in October.
The vessels will be fitted out with three 1359kWe generators, each powered by an IMO Tier III compliant Cummins QSK50 diesel unit that will turn at 1800 RPM.
In addition to servicing Polish navigational aids and ice breaking, the vessels will be equipped for towing ships in emergencies. A major part of their work will comprise of hydrographic research on water quality and depth contours.
They will also be fitted with fire monitors for fighting vessel fires. Both vessels will carry the class notification allowing operations to 200 nautical miles offshore.
The vessels will replace two 35-year old vessels currently being used by the offices.
Funding for the project is being provided by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund.
