McTays’ million pound slipway
McTays shipbuilder in Birkenhead, UK, has invested more than £1million at its headquarters including upgrading a slipway which is now capable of accommodating vessels up to 2,000 tonnes.
McTays, the shipbuilding subsidiary of HS Ocean Group of Companies, opened the upgraded slipway at its yard in Birkenhead on the banks of the River Mersey to coincide with its 40th anniversary. Peter Breslin, managing director, said the slipway will enable the shipyard to accommodate vessels up to 90 metres in length.
Peter told Maritime Journal: “Over the last 40 years, McTays has built 120 specialist ships and marine structures. The upgraded slipway will bring larger vessels into our yard and will ensure we will go from strength to strength.”
The upgrade included increasing the overall length of the slipway and the procurement of a new slipway winch which is capable of slipping vessels up to 2,000 tonnes.
