Offshore wind deck carrier has huge capacity
A heavy cargo deck carrier with an extremely high load-bearing capacity and a 3,600sqm flat loading deck for maximum utilisation and easy use is currently being built at a Chinese shipyard for offshore wind projects in the North and Baltic Seas.
Developed by HeavyLift@Sea, the carrier (DC 10000) can transport components that cannot be lifted by crane due to their weight or structure, but are rolled onto the loading deck.
“Our client for this project, a Hamburg-based shipping company specialising in offshore wind projects, is already operating a deck carrier, which is to be supplemented by a more flexible high-performance new-build. The ship will initially transport wind power components for offshore wind turbines in the North Sea and Baltic Sea,” says Hendrik Gröne, managing director of HeavyLift@Sea.
Compact design
As the ship had to be narrow enough to call at small ports, it has a compact design compared to the loading deck, with a length of 148.50m and a width of 28m.
The deck’s high load-bearing capacity ensures a high degree of flexibility when using the heavy goods transporter, which has a total load capacity of around 10,000t.
The heavy goods transporter is also prepared for equipping with DP2, making it suitable for work in highly complex offshore projects worldwide.
To optimise the diesel-electric propulsion to the ship’s size and achieve maximum manoeuvrability, the generators under the aft deck were divided in an unconventional way, which also resulted in high energy efficiency with a speed of around 12 knots.
