Pipe repairer develops new protective coating

A new British pipe repair company is aiming to save operators time and money with an innovative new barrier coating applied to the inside of pipes which seals leaks and prevents further corrosion.

The repair process involves heating and cleaning the pipe to remove all debris and scale, then the barrier coating is applied using airflow or a rotating head

R2 Pipetech Ltd specialises in relining failing and vulnerable pipework. It has developed fully mobile rigs for use on board vessels for rehabilitating and protecting pipes of all diameters and lengths.

“Much attention is paid the pipe exterior and the surrounding area and bulkheads when it comes to preparation and coating, the pipe interior is often overlooked,” said Richard Joyce, managing director at R2Pipetech.

“This results in through-wall corrosion from the inside of the pipe often causing severe damage and premature pipe failure, this will lead to loss of the liquid, damage to the vessel or cargo or could result in an environmental incident.”

High grade coating

The repair process involves heating and cleaning the pipe to remove all debris and scale, then the barrier coating is applied using airflow or a rotating head. This applies an even coat along the entire pipe interior protecting it for decades to come.

R2 Pipetech Ltd has worked with the University of Southampton to develop high grade coating systems for seawater, foul water, high temperature, chemical and high wear applications.

It has also developed a coating for erosion control in high temperature acidic environments.

The company provides restoration services for pipes measuring from 15mm to 600mm diameters that serve scuppers, drains, chemical, potable and hot water systems.
