Bespoke rubber solution for a national treasure
Along with its hatch seals and other maritime rubber products on display at Seawork this June, Portmere Rubber can boast many bespoke and long-lasting rubber sealing solutions.
One showcase example that’s been going strong since its first installation in 1998 is Portmere’s solution to seal the world-famous Anderton Boat Lift.
Designed by Edwin Clark during Queen Victoria’s reign to speed up the movement of cargo between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal, the lift was built in 1875. The Anderton Boat Lift had unique and specific sealing needs that Portmere provided the solutions to.
In 1983 the Anderton Boat Lift was closed after serious corrosion was discovered during a routine safety inspection, and a 20-year restoration process involving a complete overhaul of the seals commenced.
The unique sealing solution provided by Portmere not only needed to satisfy the requirements of operational efficiency and safety, but also had to inconspicuously maintain the originality of this national treasure.
Special design, development and manufacturing skills were employed to meet these specific needs. With Portmere’s help, the Anderton Boat Lift was restored to its original working condition, enabling boat owners and visitors alike to ride it once again.
