ABB powers next-gen hybrid ferries
ABB has been selected to supply integrated vessel propulsion and power systems for BC Ferries’ four new hybrid ferries, advancing large-scale vessel electrification from 2029.
The order, booked in the fourth quarter of 2025, forms part of BC Ferries’ New Major Vessels programme, designed to replace four end-of-life ships with quieter, lower-emission alternatives.

“With diesel-battery hybrid technology that can operate on bio and renewable diesel today and transition to full electrification as infrastructure evolves, these ships are a critical part of building a cleaner, quieter, and more reliable ferry system for the future.”
Low emissions
The double-ended ferries will be built at China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyard and will operate across key routes in the Strait of Georgia, where growing passenger demand and environmental sensitivity require more efficient vessel propulsion solutions.
Each hybrid ferry will be equipped with ABB’s Azipod electric propulsion and its Onboard DC Grid power distribution platform, designed to optimise energy flows and reduce conversion losses.
The vessels will also feature battery systems of up to 70 MWh, supporting hybrid operations and a future transition to full electric service.
High-capacity shore charging systems rated above 60 MW will enable fast turnarounds and zero-emission port calls, while ABB’s digital tools will provide real-time operational insights.
These digital technologies are intended to help BC Ferries deliver an improved travel experience for passengers while reducing environmental impact.
