Battery-methanol powered tug power supply deal
Marine battery pioneer AYK Energy has secured a landmark deal to supply the 6MWh battery powering the world’s first battery-methanol tug, helping set a new standard for alternative fuel powered port vessels.
AYK Energy will deliver the innovative battery system to Turkish shipyard Uzmar, which is building the vessel for global towage provider Svitzer.

Proven design
The battery-powered tug is based on Svitzer’s TRAnsverse tug design and will rely on its battery-electric powertrain for more than 90% of its operations.
The vessel’s design will also allow the battery-powered tug to operate more efficiently than internal combustion engine powered tugs of a traditional design.
Dual-fuel methanol engines will serve as a backup, providing extended range and reliability. The vessel, with a gross tonnage of approximately 806 tonnes, will reach speeds of up to 14 knots.
The groundbreaking tug, set for delivery in the second half of 2025, will operate in the Port of Gothenburg and provide zero-emission services across a quarter of Svitzer’s Swedish operations.
