Liverpool Waters’ Princes Dock deep cleaned
Waterway maintenance company Water Witch has successfully reduced the level of pollution in the water spaces around Princes Dock, Liverpool Waters, following the completion of a five-month contract with Peel Land and Property.
Liverpool-based Water Witch build and operate trash and litter skimmer boats to retrieve plastics and debris from waterways around the world and this summer undertook cleaning work weekly as part of Peel Land and Property’s GB£5bn Liverpool Waters regeneration project, which covers 60 hectares of Liverpool’s historic docklands.
Jackie Caddick, director at Water Witch, said: “This summer we’ve been working with Peel Land and Property on a weekly basis on cleaning up the waterways. This has included collecting algae which occurs naturally but blooms in the warm and sunny weather.
“We’ve also removed plastic bottles, Styrofoam and plastic cups,which are blown or washed into the water from all over the city. Our litter boats collect these which will prevent the plastics reaching the sea and causing further pollution.”
The Liverpool Waters regeneration project will create five distinct neighbourhoods with commercial, residential and leisure facilities for people to enjoy. Princes Dock is home to many high-profile businesses and has also seen a rise in the number of popular summer events being held there.
Work is also due to start on a new Isle of Man ferry terminal and a new cruise liner terminal.
