Three Port of Bristol tugs have assisted in extinguishing a fire on a shoreside crane while loading a bulk carrier carrying barley for export.

Svitzer Avon commenced firefighting under command of the dockmaster and it was soon joined by Svitzer Hawk and Multratug 27 to provide additional assistance extinguishing the flames.

After just 20 minutes all three tugs were ordered to stop their monitors and with the fire extinguished released, Svitzer Avon’s master Shaun Arthur stating it was merely “all in a day’s work”. Many shiphandling tugs are equipped for external firefighting suitable for fires ashore as well as on ships themselves.

German propulsion manufacturer Schottel has won an order to supply thrusters for a harbour tug under construction for Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.

The tug, designed by Glosten is being built by Washburn & Doughty will be equipped with DRP 210 FP thrusters (500kW each) powered by EPA Tier III engines and includes the DNV-GL type approved LEACON system ensuring permanent monitoring of the propeller shaft and steering seals. Of a modest size, the 18.3m LOA tug is considered ideal for manoeuvring inside lock chambers while of sufficient beam (8.5m) for improved performance in ice and enhanced stability.

Grupo Sousa and Pioneiro de Rio Servicos Maritimos have completed the takeover of Svitzer’s Portuguese maritime operations through Portugs.

At the time of reporting the move, Svitzer stated its operations in Portugal has been facing declining volumes resulting in “difficult market conditions” the decision in line with its wider corporate growth strategy. This follows a strategic review of its portfolio, including consideration of the mixed financial performance in Portugal since initial entry in 2005.

Crowley Maritime Corporation has announced an agreement to bareboat charter a newbuild RAL RApport design tug from Brusco Tug and Barge.

The ASD tug was built by Diversified Marine Inc of Portland Oregon to provide shiphandling services in Pacific Northwest and Californian ports. It is powered by Caterpillar 3512 Tier IV compliant engines producing 6,000hp in total with its 81t bollard pull maximising performance including high safety levels while exceeding federal and State of California environmental regulation.

The initial area of operation will be Puget Sound, but it will be capable of shiphandling operations in Crowley-services ports throughout California#
