Making Progress Possible at SMM

At this year’s show, CMPS’s technology display segment will present proven emission reduction solutions like ACERT Technology, Caterpillar Common Rail (CCR), and Flexible Camshaft Technology (FCT). Also on display will b the most advanced MaK Low Emission Engine Technology (LEE) and a new version of the MaK DICARE engine diagnosis and monitoring system.

The manufacturing segment will provide insights into how Caterpillar is increasing global manufacturing capacities in order to cope with continuous strong demand from the ocean going, commercial marine, and leisure boat sectors.

Two MaK 16 M 32 C marine engines, each of 8,000 kW, will jointly propel a ‘Super Tug’ with more than 250 tons bollard pull. PT. Batamec shipyard in Batam, Indonesia, is working closely with Vik-Sandvik Group, the Norwegian OSV design specialists, tobuild this multi-functional “VS491 Clean Design” Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessel (AHTSV).

In addition to the two V-type M 32 C engines, the CMPS scope of supply for this 90m design includes hybrid PTO/PTI gearboxes, 21m of shafting and 4.2m diameter propellers, all of which are from Scana Volda. The gearboxes provide a lot of flexibility with 4,500 kW PTO and 2,000 kW PTI (Power Take In) capability. This setup allows the tug to operate as a diesel-electric vessel when in dynamic positioning mode while using full engine power and electric boost for maximum pull operations.

The MaK VM 32 C engine series comprising 12 and 16 cylinder versions was introduced in 2000. Utilising a bore of 320 mm and a stroke of 420 mm, these diesels cover a power range from 5,760 to 8,000 kW at 720 or 750 rpm.

The first four VS491 Clean Design vessels have been sold by Otto Marine to Mosvold Supply Ltd of Norway and will be capable of global operation. Newbuildings number one and two will be delivered in October 2009 and June 2010. Meanwhile, Otto Marine has received further enquiries from customers asking for repeat vessels of similar design.
