Underwater services secure historic Barbican
There is a rich seam of history attached to the Barbican in Plymouth UK. It is from here that Sir Francs Drake sailed to defeat the Spanish Armada and from the Mayflower Steps here that the Pilgrim Fathers sailed to the New World.
The Marine Biological Association building opened here in 1888, the first major marine biology laboratory in the country. It established Plymouth as a pioneering base in the field of marine biology and led, a century later, to its current status as home of the National Maritime Museum. There is little wonder that the Sutton Harbour Company Ltd, which runs the Barbican, felt a great sense of responsibility when visible signs of deterioration became visible in the Barbican’s listed harbour walls. An in-water diving video survey (CVI) was required and, due to limited knowledge of the specialist services required, Sutton Harbour Company contracted Alpha Marine Services Ltd (AMS) to supply diving/marine specialist consultancy and documentation on behalf of the client and client representative.
AMS informed the client about relevant legislation, personnel requirements, certification, equipment levels and the documentation required to carry out such works. AMS provided the scope of works to the proposed contractors on behalf of the client so that quotations could be forwarded before the main contractor, Sub Marine Services, was chosen.
AMS then served as the focal point for the contractors on behalf of the client. During the survey AMS provided a client’s representative on site to oversee the contractor and ensure works were carried out in the most expeditious and cost effective way. This process aided the contractor whilst also ensuring best value for the client. AMS also provided the client with a diving service for small operations on a day rate basis and also undertook emergency call out services.
As a result of this productive relationship, Sutton Harbour Company has registered Alpha Marine Services as an approved supplier for repeat services.
