MAREC 2004 Sees Seas of Opportunity Offshore
Governments have pledged that new and renewable energies will play an ever growing role in their national energy mixes.
The British Government has targeted 10% of UK energy requirements from renewables by 2010 and 20% by 2020.
Scotland is aiming even higher, with 18% and 40% goals for the same years.
It is against this background that MAREC 2004, the Third International Conference on Marine Renewable Energy is being held next month at the New and Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) at Blyth UK.
From 6-9 July the conference will highlight and promote discussion on all technical, economic and scientific aspects of marine-based wind, wave and tidal power generation.
MAREC 2004 is organised by The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and The School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at Newcastle University. Dr Chris French, senior lecturer at the University and director of research and development at NaREC said, ‘If we are to rise to the challenges of the global increase in power consumption in the shadow of global warming, we need to be focussed on the diversification of energy production on a global level.
The MAREC conference brings together the academic, industrial and finance communities to examine the state of this emerging industry as well as exchanging views and opinions that can be used to influence energy policy.’
