Breakthrough aximuthing order for Kort Propulsion
Kent UK based Kort Propulsion has completed an order far from home, supplying an Indian shipyard with 12 KT300AZ azimuthing units which will drive six new workboats being built for the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
The IWAI was established in 1986 for the development and regulation of inland waterways for shipping and navigation and undertakes projects for the development and maintenance of IWT Infrastructure on national waterways through grants received from the country’s Ministry of Shipping.
Kort was in contact at the design stage offering advice on the powering of the vessel in respect of performance in vessel propulsion. This typically consists of vessel resistance estimates, free running predictions and bollard pull predictions.
Kort can also offer further estimates on vessel performance such as thrust figures and rpm figures across the speed range. Once all the variables are decided upon, Kort then works closely with the shipyard and owners.
The Kort KT300AZ steerable propeller propulsion units will be powered by Greaves Cotton Indian water cooled marine diesel engines developing 275hp at 1,800rpm and driving fixed blade propellers through 3:1 reduction gearboxes, an overcentre clutch, torsional vibration coupling and cardan shafts.
It should be emphasised that the design of the complete system is based on established components, proven to provide long life and reliability, with low maintenance requirements. The design has been proven over a long history of supply to many customers in many diverse environments, often operating in difficult conditions.
The 12 units have now been delivered. This is an exciting order for Kort Propulsion and a step significant step into the Indian market, where rapid growth is expected to take place over the coming years.
