Capilano design for Shaver

The tug is currently under construction at the local yard of Diversified Marine Inc Portland. Due for delivery later this year, the tug will be the most powerful in the Shaver fleet. The Shaver Transportation Company employs a fleet of ten tugs of various types engaged in shiphandling and tug and barge work, much of which is concerned with the transportation of grain.

The new tug will be built to one of a new series of ‘Columbia’ class designs produced by Capilano, and measures 24.38m in length overall, with a moulded breadth of 11.00m, a moulded depth of 4.40m and maximum draft of 5.20m.

Two MTV/Detroit Diesel 16V4000 M61 main engines will generate a total of 5,360 bhp (4,000 kW) at 1,800 rpm to drive a pair of Schottel SRP1215 fully steerable propulsion units. Each unit will incorporate a 2,566mm diameter fixed pitch propeller rotating within a thrust enhancing nozzle. This arrangement is expected to give the new tug a bollard pull of over 60 tons.

Shiphandling duties will be conducted using a heavy duty Markey DEPCF-48 electrically powered towing winch. The winch will be equipped with a 50 hp motor and have a maximum brake capacity of 180 tons and a line pull of 10 tons on the second layer at 20m per minute. A single drum will be equipped with 122m of 230mm (9inch) circumference Spectra/Plasma towline in 8 layers.
