New contracts signed for Xbloc
Delta Marine Consultants (DMC) has signed a number of contracts recently for the use of its innovative Xbloc concrete armour units.
The first contract will see Xblocs used for protection of land reclaimed in a newly developed area of Das Island in Abu Dhabi in the Middle East. Van Oord will use 3 cu/m Xblocs to protect the shoreline, applying a total quantity of 100,000 cu/m of the armoured units. The Xblocs will be cast in Ajman, capital city in the United Arab Emirates, and will be transported to site by sea.
DMC said the Xblocs will be cast using the horizontal casting method. The Xbloc mould for this casting method has been designed by BAM Speciale Technieken in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Casting of Xblocs for the project has already commenced.
DMC has also signed a license agreement with a joint venture of Boskalis and Per Aarsleff for the application of Xblocs on a breakwater at the Swinoujscie LNG terminal in Poland. The breakwater for the terminal will be 3 km, in length and will be protecting using Xblocs ranging in size from 1 cu/m to 2.5 cu/m and 5 cu/m.
The armoured units will be cast on site by BAM Materieel in the Netherlands. Physical scale model testing of the breakwater was carried out by DMV at its laboratory in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
