Grounded Carrier a Constructive Total Loss

The operation to remove the remaining 24,000 litres of fuel oil, along with oily water and other hazardous materials, was completed on 9 April, five days after the grounding.

Scarlett Elworthy from the Environment Agency said to Maritime Journal: “The small amount of oil gas oil that has leaked from the vessel has mainly evaporated so we are not expecting a large scale issue at this time. The overall environmental risk is low.”

The vessel was carrying 40,000 litres of fuel when it ran aground at Raynes Jetty in Llanddulas. It supposedly hit a rock and ended up on the beach after taking on its load of limestone at the jetty. It is still unclear as to what happened but there were strong gales at the time.

The vessel remains aground, resting against concrete dolosse blocks on the beach close to the North Wales Expressway (A55).

PGC Demolition, the same company which removed the fuel oil from the stricken vessel, were also awarded the contract to remove the wreck. PGC’s proposal to cut the vessel up on site and remove it for recycling have been approved by the Deputy to the Secretary of State’s Respresentative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP). Work started on 10 April and is expected to last for up to 10 weeks.
