Trelleborg fendering for Indian shipyard

Trelleborg Marine Systems collaborated with ABG Shipyard Ltd at Gujarat in India to create an innovative, bespoke solution for the design and installation of a fendering system.

Trelleborg produced a bespoke design for the fenders at ABG Shipyard

It needed to overcome high tidal variation, underwater currents and high wind velocities faced by the shipyard. The project was also required to meet the conflicting demands of having an economical design whilst being able to accommodate high impact loads.

D N Mathur, senior vice president of projects at ABG Shipyard Ltd, explained that Trelleborg worked with its civil consultant and technical team to develop a custom built solution, without over-running tight project timelines.

Amit Madan, director of the Trelleborg Marine Systems’ office in Ahmedabad, said the solution developed by Trelleborg’s in-house design team consisted of two piles connected with a fabricated frame to improve the load carrying capacity of the jetty. Parallel motion fenders were then installed on the centre of the beams to further reduce impact on the structure.

The beams were designed at Trelleborg’s design centre in India, which also undertook stress analysis of the proposed system. The proposal and stress analysis data were reviewed and approved by ABG Shipyard and their structural consultant, as well as being validated by BMT.
