Entire Malta EEZ surveyed
Remote sensing specialist Terra Imaging, which has bases in France, Germany and Holland, reports successful airborne mapping of the entire Maltese archipelago from ocean floor to church spires.
The company says it will lead to what will be the very first fully integrated capture of a nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Comprising topographic and bathymetric Lidar as well as sidescan sonar and multibeam sounder datasets, the project combines 3D data and high resolution spatial data following aerial scanning of island terrains to accuracies of better than 10cm. Co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the operations involved scanning of the ocean floor around the islands with a Hawkeye 11B bathymetric system at depths of 15m followed by conventional sidescan sonar and echosounder studies of deeper areas down to 200m.
All data will be viewable via a Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) portal due to be launched next year.
