Gardline Baltic wind farm
Great Yarmouth UK based Gardline Geosciences, in association with GEO of Denmark, has been awarded contracts worth €18 million by Spanish combine Iberdrola under which it will carry out preliminary geological surveys for the proposed Wikinger offshore German wind farm in the Baltic.
The findings are to be used in foundation design for 80 wind turbines at the facility, which will be one of the world’s largest deepwater farms, with a projected output of 400MW. The €1.6bn venture is scheduled to become operational in 2016. Joint survey operations will cover an area of some 34 sq/km using specially designed Gardline vessels to take sedimentary and rock samples while also conducting seismic studies to determine structures of the terrain.
Eric Zon, Gardline Geosciences’ managing director, says the project marks another important stage in the company’s involvement with the development of German and UK wind farms. Further afield, it has recently concluded a joint venture agreement with Asian Geos Sdn Bhd (AGSB) of Malaysia under which the two organisations are to share their engineering and technical expertise in order to pursue international offshore oil and gas projects.
