Scania launches workboat range at Seawork

Scania has extended its marine engine range with the introduction of an all new nine litre power unit which made its European debut at Seawork last month.

Designated DI9M, the new nine litre engine offered in a choice of five propulsion power outputs ranging from 220 to 400 horsepower

Developed as part of Scania’s global engine platform, the new engine is built according to the same modular design programme as Scania’s existing 13 and 16 litre units. This means many components are shared across the range, a design benefit which offers considerable operational and maintenance advantages. Between them the three members of Scania’s engine family provide a comprehensive selection of power outputs spanning 220 to 1,000 horsepower.

Designated DI9M, the new nine litre engine is a compact five cylinder in-line turbocharged unit offered in a choice of five propulsion power outputs ranging from 220 to 400 horsepower. As such, the DI9M is particularly well suited to a broad selection of workboat applications, such as for inshore fishing vessels and small ferries. The unit also be used as an auxiliary power source suitable for uses as diverse as generator sets, onboard pumps and bow thrusters, with four ratings from 199 to 323 kW available.

The Scania DI9M has a service interval of 500 hours. In terms of maintenance, and in common with Scania’s 13 and 16 litre units, the unit features individual cylinder heads to permit one man servicing. The engine is also equipped with Scania’s Saver Ring, which has been designed to reduce wear and extend engine life. Fitted inside the cylinder liner, the Saver Ring removes soot and other residue trapped between the upper piston ring and the piston top.

Conforming to current IMO II exhaust emissions standards, the DI9M is equipped with Scania PDE high pressure unit injectors and is controlled by Scania’s EMS advanced engine management system. Cooling options include heat exchanger or keel cooling and, for auxiliary power applications, a fan drive.
