Smooth shifting for Alnmaritec’s latest WFSV
Northumberland UK based boat builder Alnmaritec has recently launched the latest (and third) of its wind farm support vessels (WFSV), NSL Discovery, for long-time client North Sea Logistics.
This is the 11th boat built by Alnmaritec for North Sea Logistics.
ZF Services UK is the gearbox and controls supplier to Alnmaritec for its Wave Captain class of vessel and has supplied gearboxes for over half of the 150 workboats built by Alnmaritec during the past 25 years.
NSL Discovery measures 18.9m LOA, with a 7.2m beam and a draft of 1.4m. Displacing 40 tonnes, the vessel will carry a 10 tonne payload. It is powered by twin Doosan V222TI diesel engines rated at 880 bhp coupled to ZF 2000V gearboxes with ZF 9000 Series ClearCommand controls driving twin five blade propellers for a speed of 25 knots.
The ZF 2000 V 10° V-drive, remote mount marine transmission is compact, lightweight and simple to install. It has a three shaft reverse reduction transmission and a hydraulic clutch mounted on the input shaft and a further one on the reverse shaft. Suitable for twin engine installation, the ZF 2000 V offers smooth and reliable shifting and is designed to take maximum propeller thrust astern and ahead. Other features include an emergency ‘get home’ capability and SUPERSHIFT clutch control.
The vessel has demonstrated exceptional sea keeping characteristics and handling when approaching and pushing up on the wind turbines.
It is finished with the innovative ‘Intersleek’ paint system designed to provide fuel and environmental benefits. There is full suspension seating for 12 and a large galley and mess area as well as four day berths on the lower deck.
In 2011 ZF Services UK was contracted by Alnmaritec to supply an initial four shipsets of ZF 2000 V gearboxes with 9000 Series ClearCommand Control Systems. These were for Alnmaritec’s new Wave Captain class WFSVs, the first three of which are now in service, with two more in construction.
Enabling exceptional sea keeping characteristics, Alnmaritec’s Wave Captain design is a derivative of the larger Wave Master class vessels which have proved highly successful in service. It features the unique high efficiency hull form developed by Alnmaritec using extensive CFD modeling and towing tank testing.
