Re-manufactured engines from Caterpillar

These re-manufactured engines are mainly aimed at the fishing and workboat sectors in addition to the leisure market.

During the re-manufacturing process, Caterpillar claims that only new or genuine re-manufactured parts will be used during the engine overhaul, bringing the engines up to virtually new condition. The current programme will see Caterpillar engines from the Cat 3116, Cat 3126 and Cat 3126B ranges available as re-manufactured units. The engines in the initial range will be available from this summer.

“These are some of our most popular engine platforms we’ve ever produced, said David Holt, the Caterpillar Marine part sales manager. “We are proud to re-launch them as re-manufactured engines providing customers with a reliable yet affordable alternative to engine overhaul. These are the first re-manufactured engines we’ve launched for our marine business and we look forward to expanding the programme to include more commercial offerings in 2015.”

The re-manufactured engines will meet the original emissions requirements of the existing platforms whilst providing customers with the confidence of installing factory based solutions. In practice, an engine taken out of a vessel will be exchanged for a re-manufactured engine which will greatly reduce the time the vessel is out of action for an overhaul. “This is a cost-sensitive way of bringing a vessel back to life”, added Holt.

Caterpillar claims the re-manufacturing is more than just rebuilding an engine. They claim that it is returning engines to their original performance specifications through the use of state of the art salvage techniques, strict re-use guidelines, advanced manufacturing systems and unequalled quality control. This has been made achievable because the engines were designed and built originally to be re-manufactured for a second life.

Caterpillar has previously offered re-manufactured engine components for use when overhauling engines but with this new service it is now extended to complete engines, which makes for a simple engine replacement when the time comes for a vessel overhaul. During the process the engines are upgraded where possible and they are fully tested on a dynamometer for performance.
