Change of engines after just six months
A fishing catamaran which only went into service in February this year has already had a change of engines – this time to Sole Diesel.
The 9.6m vessel, Wyvilless, owned and operated by Yorkshire, UK-based SH Energy, was originally fitted with secondhand marinised Daihatsu Fourtrack engines, but with the boat out fishing as many days as possible, the owners decided new engines were needed.
Now they have installed twin SN110, indirect injection, four cylinder engines supplied and fitted by Engines Plus giving the Wyvilless a top speed of around 16 knots. In addition Engines Plus also supplied a PRM500D 2.5:1 marine gearbox.
The 3.1 litre engines are based on a Nissan block and are naturally aspirated, producing 103bhp at 3600rpm. One engine runs a hydraulic power take off to drive the Spencer Carter pot hauling pump and the other fitted with a deck wash pump driven off the front of the engine using a twin belt arrangement.
The vessel is operated out of Scarborough throughout the season, skippered by co-owner Mark Wyvill. Mr Wyvill, who specialises in potting for lobster and crabs with up to 80% of the catch exported to France, explained the choice of engines: “We were attracted to the Sole Diesel SN110 due to the impressive fuel consumption and the engines were non turbo charged and uncomplicated, with standard mechanical governors not featuring all the electronics commonly found on diesel engines nowadays,” he said.
“We have now had the boat out on three occasions and our calculations on fuel savings were correct; we are certainly putting in less diesel than before.” And he added: “Engines Plus also put together the package we required, fitting the PTO and deckwash pump, which made our life easier, leaving us to concentrate on fishing.”
“The SN-110 is ideal for this type of application,” said Hedley Beavis, Engines Plus, sales director, marine products. “The Sole product along with our engineering skills gave this customer exactly the service and product required.”
The engines are available from 17 to 285bhp and Sole Diesel also produces a range of marine gensets from 6 to 115kVA. The majority of the propulsion engines are non-electric with a selection being turbo charged.
