Blended learning
Ocean Training Online, a UK-based marine training provider has launched what it claims is the first Blended Learning course approved by the MCA: Officer of the Watch (Yachts under 3000 gt) The Master 200 course is also about to be launched.
Major revisions to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (The STCW Convention) came into force in 2012 when the “Manila Amendments – 2010” were adopted. These aim to establish a Global standard for Training and Certification of seafarers to ensure operation of technically advanced vessels of the future. The Manila 2010 amendments include the introduction of modern training methodology such as distance learning and Web based training.
Modern training for seagoing personnel includes a good knowledge of the theory combined with the implementation of the learning on a practical college basis. The combination of Distance Learning theory and college based practical courses is called Blended Learning and, according to Ocean Training, is ‘the way forward in the 21st Century’.
Blended learning means that clients can learn all the theory elements of a course at sea, while working on a vessel, or at home, via e-learning. This means that they can learn in spare time, a useful benefit that Ocean Training refers to as “Earn while you Learn” This unique facility will mean that the cost of gaining certification will be much reduced due to savings on travel or accommodation while studying the theory elements.
The OOW and Master 200 course includes over 380 animations to enhance learning. Ocean Training claim they are so good they are now used by the MCA themselves for in house training of maritime professionals.
