British Maritime Technology ''sSingapore based subsidiary BMT Asia Pacific Pte Ltd hasrecently advised on the design of a major new deep water container terminal at Sepangar Bay in eastern Malaysia. The study considered where the terminal needed to be located to minimise dredging and enable ships to manoeuvre safely in the area, avoiding potentially dangerous reefs.
Much of the work was carried out using PC Rembrandt, BMT's ship handling training and familiarisation software.
This was used to determine the wind and tidal conditions under which vessel will be able to enter and depart from the port with and without the support of tugs. The company also set out the strategy for beacon, buoy and light use in the area.
David Wignall, Managing Director of BMT Asia Pacific, said: 'The new port is a key part of a development strategy which aims to transform the Sabah regional economy.
The aim is to stimulate the manufacturing of consumer and industrial goods in the area, which will be exported alongside basic commodities such as rubber, palm oil and tin.'
