Busy year for Damen
Since acquiring Sobrena in early 2012, Damen Shiprepair Brest has serviced 50 vessels from leading shipowners and managers.
The French yard’s busy year includes work on a number of Afra/Suezmax tankers and LNG carriers.
Jos Goris, managing director of Damen Shiprepair Brest, said: “We aim to become a modern, clean and efficient ship repair facility with a high level of process transparency and quality of service where each client feels safe and supported. This is not an easy task but we are well underway.”
Damen invested heavily in the new yard to improve its facilities including implementing more efficient working hours under a new collective labour agreement and investing in a state of the art plasma cutting machine.
For larger projects, the company built modern facilities to accommodate over 200 subcontractors.
The latest project concerns the Höegh LNG owned and MOL LNG Transport managed 123,800m³ LNG Libra, which is currently at the yard.
Elsewhere, Damen has officially launched the construction phase of 14 Damen ASD tugs for Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). Under the contract, Damen will supply nine 3212 model tugs and five 2810 model tugs, with 80 and 50 tonnes of bollard pull.
The vessels, which will assist tankers at near shore loading terminals and single point mooring further offshore, are due to be delivered from 2014 onwards.
In addition, Damen is constructing an 87m Sail Training Vessel (STV) for the Ministry of Defence in Oman. The square rigged, three masted steel clipper will be delivered in August 2014.
