Cable bury bathymetry on show at Seawork

Survey quality, depth data (bathymetry) is now possible for Depth of Bury cable survey in shallow water, using a Smarttrak cable tracker from Seawork exhibitor Innovatum on a small ROV .

The vessel Geosurveyor 4 is seen off Sizewell Beach in Suffolk UK supporting the survey of an export cable from the Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm.

There is an increasing demand for high accuracy Depth of Bury cable survey in shallow water, of both wind farm cables and also the inshore sections of communication cables. In up to 50m water depth, this type of survey can be carried out with a Smartrak cable tracking system mounted on a small ROV, such as the Saab SeaEye Falcon. A small, inshore survey vessel, such as a work class catamaran equipped with an A-frame or crane for ROV handling is a suitable and cost effective support vessel. The operation requires a boat crew plus a three person crew to run the survey, and pilot and handle the ROV. Preliminary data is available immediately and final data is post-processed.

Collecting high accuracy, survey quality data in shallow water can be challenging, because shallow water conditions result in poor visibility and strong currents.

Innovatum now offers an integrated pressure transducer as a must have option for all Innovatum Smartrak cable and pipeline tracking systems. The transducer can be retro-fitted to any Smartrak. This very sensitive pressure transducer contributes survey quality bathymetry data to better than .01% of water depth. This allows much more accurate calculation of the position of the ROV at all times, which allows much more accurate Depth of Bury calculation of the target cable.

Innovatum Ltd will be at Seawork 2012 on Stand B57.
