Civils award
GPS Marine (UK) have won an ‘ICE London Civil Engineering 2014 Award’ for works undertaken on the Crossrail Project, involving the installation and removal of cofferdams at Connaught.
GPS Marine in partnership with CMP were contracted to install two double skin cofferdams at the Eastern and Western ends of the Connaught Passage between the Royal Victoria and Royal Albert Docks in East London. Both cofferdams had all sheet piles, wallings and ties installed, with sealing and filling operations completed to a tight programme in March 2013.
The installation of the cofferdams allowed the water in the Connaught Passage to be pumped out to create a dry construction site. This then permitted the excavation works to commence, digging down to the roof of the disused Victorian rail tunnel to undertake the required tunnel strengthening and enlargement works through a ‘cut and cover’ approach.
After the tunnel underground works were completed, GPS Marine returned to site in July 2013 and the complete removal of the cofferdams was successfully completed to programme by the end of August 2013.
