DEME provides details of Middle East contract
DEME in Belgium says that, amongst several new assignments in the Middle East, an important contract has been awarded to Dredging International, a DEME Group company, for site preparation dredging and reclamation at Ruwais, 275km from the city of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The work will be executed for Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (TAKREER) under an EPC lump sum turnkey contract worth a total of US$346m (€300m). The work needs to be completed in a period of 21 months, by the spring of 2011. A number of dredgers in the DEME fleet will be involved in the execution of the project.
The contract is package number five of a seven package project to construct a new 400,000 barrel per day refinery in Ruwais which will operate alongside Takreer’s existing 417,000 bpd facility.
The entire project is due for completion in the first quarter of 2014. Once completed, the project will enable production at the refinery to increase from 2.7m tons a year to 5.3m tons. It will also produce 1.1m tons a year of petrochemical feedstock.
The site preparation work includes dredging and pumping ashore of 42m m3 of material to create the platform for the site of the refinery. The work will involve the mobilisation of several heavy duty cutter suction dredgers and trailing suction hopper dredgers, booster stations, and spreader pontoons. Work was due to begin on 7 June 2009.
