DNV GL backing for pipe repair solution

Alveus d.o.o. gained the certificate for its COMPA Repairs technology as part of the EU project COMPA 2GO (Composite Repairs for Ships – Service Demonstration, Certification and Market Entry).

DNV GL’s Statement of Feasibility was given for the use of composite patches for repairing corroded steel pipes and tank plates with the aim to provide immediate water tightness and slow down further corrosion. The composite patch is a carbon and glass fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), that is lightweight but strong.

Besides the technology certification, COMPA Repairs got a Certificate of Registration for a European Union trade mark for engineering services and for the repair and maintenance of various maritime structures valid for a period of 10 years.

COMPA 2GO aims to provide a faster, cheaper and much safer alternative than the traditional cutting and welding of steel parts on board a ship.

Proven technology

COMPA Repairs technology was demonstrated onboard ships in service, in various EU ports and during vessel voyages. Two of the most challenging repairs took place during ship stay in the Port of Antwerp.

To repair a main sea water pipe, COMPA Repairs had to be applied to both inner and outer side of the pipe in a limited time period, within a confined space. This reinforced the pipe and ensured it was watertight.

The other challenge included a repair of a scrubber system pipe leaking NaOH. The repair had to result in a watertight pipe with more permanent structural integrity
