Romania will switch on a coal-fired power plant after having to close down its nuclear plant because of the River Danube’s shrinking water levels.

In an initial effort to keep the Cernavodă plant switched on, the military and water authorities used underwater explosives to blast away a rock obstruction and sink barges loaded with rock to try and raise water levels to cool the units. While given a reprieve, the levels have dropped again.
