TenneT delivers final 700MW offshore link
TenneT, the European electricity transmission system operator (TSO) that manages high-voltage electricity grids in the Netherlands and Germany, has completed the final connection in its 700MW offshore link.
The latest grid connection at Hollandse Kust (west Btea) has received a readiness certificate from DNV, confirming it meets all high-voltage standards and is ready to transmit power.
“In just under ten years, with the rollout of the 700 MW program, we have demonstrated, together with our partners and the market, that we can move mountains,” said Marco Kuijpers, director of offshore at TenneT.
“With grid readiness for Hollandse Kust (West Beta), we have now delivered all seven projects on time and budget, entirely in accordance with our plan. A great milestone for the energy transition.”
National grid
TenneT, appointed by the Dutch government in 2016 to operate the national offshore grid, has been installing offshore sockets linked to the mainland via subsea cables – a key achievement for the growing offshore wind sector.
Collaboration with the Equans/Smulders consortium during the project ensured seamless delivery of the marine civils work and platform construction.
By 2028, the Netherlands will have 6.1 GW of installed offshore wind capacity, rising to 21 GW by 2032.
TenneT’s new 2 GW grid connection programme will transport larger volumes of renewable energy efficiently, supporting a cleaner and a more resilient offshore renewables future for Europe.
In October, Jan De Nul launched the Fleeming Jenkin, the world’s largest vessel for subsea cable laying.
Once operational in the second half of 2026, the vessel’s first mission will be to install more than 2,800 kilometres of subsea cables for the same programme.
