Cummins launches inland waterways engine
Engine manufacturer Cummins has launched an engine complete with exhaust after-treatment system for vessels operating on Europe’s inland waterways.The QSK38 Stage V engine can power push and tug boats as well as dry cargo and liquid cargo vessels, Cummins says, and is fully EU certified for Stage V emissions.

The engine delivers 1400hp (1044kW) at 1800rpm.
“This in-house developed solution comes with an after-treatment package that is compact and easy to integrate,” said Cédric Merveillaud, Cummins director of Marine Europe.
The new engine can be installed in new or existing vessels, he says, and provides fuel economy, good torque and savings potential with its high-pressure Modular Common-Rail System, which he says keeps exhaust emissions to a minimum.
Europe’s Stage V emissions regulations are one of the most stringent regulations in Europe.
Nitrogen Oxides, Particulate Matter and Particulate Number are all set at extremely low levels, which makes the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction and Diesel Particulate Filter systems vital after-treatment equipment.
Cummins’ after-treatment system has been designed to fit easily into vessel engine rooms and to allow easy maintenance and service access, the company says.
