DNV updates Maritime Simulator Standard
DNV has revised its Maritime Simulator Systems Standard to strengthen vessel simulation, vessel training and vessel safety in a rapidly evolving maritime sector.
The 2025 update to DNV-ST-0033 reflects the growing role of simulation technologies as the industry adapts to alternative fuels and increasingly complex vessel systems.

Updated guidance
The revision expands simulation requirements, refines class definitions and introduces new frameworks for advanced technologies such as virtual reality (VR), synthetic environments and mixed reality.
Above all it aims to support the integration of emerging technologies while maintaining the robustness of the certification framework.
Key changes include extended competence requirements covering alternative fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, ethanol and hybrid-electric propulsion systems.
These updates aim to ensure that vessel training aligns with sustainability goals while enhancing vessel safety.
The revised standard also clarifies simulator classification pathways, aligning with ISO 5476 to improve lifesaving appliance training systems.
To reduce administrative burdens, the standard also simplifies annual audit requirements and introduces recognition for cloud-based and VR delivery formats. This enables more flexible, scalable and immersive vessel simulation solutions.
First published in 2000, the Maritime Simulator Systems Standard continues to set benchmarks for vessel training and safety, with the latest revision broadening certification opportunities for a new generation of simulation technologies.
